EOL IT Services welcomes new ICO powers for serious data breaches
19th January 2010 - EOL IT Services, a leading computer recycling and data destruction company, welcomes the news this week that the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will be able to issue fines of up to £500,000 for serious data security breaches.
The new powers are designed to deter personal data breaches and are expected to come in to force on 6th April 2010.
The size of the fine imposed will depend on the circumstances of each breach and will also factor in the size and finances of the organisation at fault.
Richard Parker, Managing Director of EOL IT Services, says: “EOL has been carrying out data destruction processes for major UK companies for over 13 years, but we are still amazed at the cavalier attitude that many companies have to the data they hold. In this current economic climate, risks are being taken by companies who are using cheap and inadequate solutions to their data destruction needs.”
“With the introduction of this new penalty hanging over them we hope that companies will give more serious thought to how they protect the data they hold.”
