Legislation - Hazardous Waste
The Hazardous Goods Legislation was borne out of necessity. In the past the UK had as many as 27 landfill sites, now reduced to just 3, and they are rapidly filling to capacity. The legislation re-classified 208 items which were not previously categorized as ‘hazardous’ into controlled waste. It is thought that approximately 160,000 companies would fall within the requirement category. This list is likely to increase in the near future to include TFT’s and other potentially high impact disposal items.
Commencement of the Hazardous Waste Regulations came into force on 16th July 2005. This means that any business producing over 200Kg of Hazardous Waste per year (CRT’s, UPS’s etc) would need to apply as a Hazardous Waste Producer. Please note this doesn’t just apply to IT equipment, but many other categories controlled by your Facilities Departments. Each premises registered will be given a unique registration number - known as a 'Premises Code'.
