Environmental Legislation Overview
Environmental Protection Act 1990
Our processing structure is reassuring to all who work with us. They have the knowledge and confidence that we are fully compliant with legislation and continue to be a trusted and responsible organisation. Our supplier audits run hand in hand with our own Quality Management Standard as part of our BS EN ISO 9001 (GB 9542) accreditation and Environmental Management Standard BS EN ISO 14001 (GB 9541).Landfill Regulations Act 2002
The Landfill Act 2002 (England & Wales) was intended to reduce the hazards and danger of a growing reliance on landfill disposal. We understand the issues and responsibility placed on us by the Landfill Regulations Act 2002, so we ensure that all our partners are processing our waste correctly. EOL operates a ZERO LANDFILL policy. We use our internal audits and BS EN ISO 9001 & 14001 Standards to maintain awareness and monitor any risks in the processes.WEEE & RoHS
Now implemented, the WEEE Directive will become part of our everyday lives. WEEE will fundamentally change the way we view our electronic waste, both at home and at work. More stringent levels of reporting will be required. The WEEE Directive will force us to become responsible for what happens to our electronic equipment from purchase to disposal. The EOL Lifecycle Management Programme and improved reporting will enable customers to achieve full compliance. As the holder of an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF) license we are able to provide evidence to compliance schemes from 1st July 2007 of how WEEE has been handled and processed.
RoHS (Restriction/Removal of Hazardous Substances) is a lesser piece of legislation. It is aimed at forcing manufacturers to stop using certain materials (i.e. Cadmium, Lead and Mercury) in the construction of their products. This has little or no impact on business or home use, as the legislation is not aimed at legacy equipment, just at the production of new.
EOL takes these matters very seriously and we are continually improving our processes to ensure conformity to legislation. We have already introduced many changes to our processes in order to ensure a smooth path to WEEE compliance. As well as our Environmental Management Standard audit for BS EN ISO 14001, we are also subject to a stringent regular audit carried out by an independent recycling consultant. The company is also an accredited member of ICER (Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling). ICER is a “think tank” formed to gather information from government bodies, manufacturers, asset disposal and recycling organisations. For more details on the WEEE & RoHS Directive see the following pages:
